(No. 2) Daniil Medvedev def. (No. 8) Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 6-3
Daniil Medvedev ended his 882-day title drought on Sunday, winning the Almaty Open ATP 250 title with a three set win over France’s Corentin Moutet. The win marks Medvedev’s 21st tour-level title, all won at different events.
Before the title won, the former World No. 1 hadn’t lifted a trophy since the 2023 Italian Open. In that span, Medvedev had lost six finals, including the US Open, Australian Open, Beijing, Vienna, Indian Wells, and Halle. His perseverance finally paid off in Almaty, where he became just the second active male player to win at least 19 hard-court titles, joining Novak Djokovic (71).
Against Moutet, who was seeking his first ATP title, Medvedev battled through a scrappy match with many momentum swings. The Frenchman capitalized on Medvedev’s 13 unforced errors in the opening two sets to keep the match close, even leveling the score by taking the second set with sharp defense and effective drop shots. But in the decider, Medvedev elevated his game — serving three aces, hitting with greater depth and aggression, and pinning Moutet deep behind the baseline. The shift proved decisive, as Moutet’s intensity dipped late and Medvedev closed out the win to finally return to the winner’s circle.
