2025 ATP Barcelona Open Final Recap

(No. 6) Holger Rune def. (No. 1) Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (6), 6-2

Holger Rune ended Carlos Alcaraz’s nine-match winning streak at the Barcelona Open to win his fifth career ATP Tour title and his first of the season. The straight-sets win also marked Rune’s first title in two years.

Alcaraz entered the final with an opportunity to win a third Barcelona Open title, having previously won the tournament in 2022 and 2023. He got off to a strong start, breaking Rune for a 3-2 lead in the opening set. However, Rune broke back to level the score at 3-all and eventually converted his fourth set point to win the first set in a tiebreak.

From there, Rune took full control of the match. After falling behind 1-2 in the second set, he won five straight games to close it out. He saved all four break points he faced in the second set, maintaining his composure under pressure.

Alcaraz appeared to be dealing with an injury and called two medical timeouts for treatment on his upper right leg. After taking an off-court timeout following the third game of the second set, he was unable to win another game upon returning. Alcaraz tried to shorten points but struggled to find consistency, finishing the match with 32 unforced errors compared to Rune’s 24.

With the win, Rune will return to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings, moving up from No. 13 to No. 9. Meanwhile, Alcaraz will drop from No. 2 to No. 3 following his loss in Barcelona and Alexander Zverev’s title win in Munich.
