2025 ATP Italian Open Quarterfinals Recap

The quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open on the ATP side has wrapped up, and the semifinal matchups are set.

(No. 1) Jannik Sinner def. (No. 6) Casper Ruud 6-0, 6-1

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner delivered a dominant straight-sets win over sixth-seeded Casper Ruud, overwhelming the Norwegian from start to finish. Sinner won 16 of the first 18 points and maintained his high level throughout the match against one of the top clay-court players on tour. Ruud, who won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid less than two weeks ago, didn’t hit his first winner until the second set. Sinner converted six of the nine break points he earned and moves on to face eleventh-seeded Tommy Paul in the semifinals.

(No. 11) Tommy Paul def. (No. 30) Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (4), 6-3

Tommy Paul advanced to consecutive semifinals in Rome with a straight-sets win over Hubert Hurkacz, becoming the first American man to reach back-to-back semifinals at the Italian Masters 1000 event since Pete Sampras in 1993 and 1994. The opening set featured six combined breaks of serve, but Paul was able to win tiebreak to take the lead. He carried that momentum into the second set, breaking early and closing out the match. Paul will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.

(No. 3) Carlos Alcaraz def. (No. 5) Jack Draper 6-4, 6-4

Carlos Alcaraz booked his spot in the Italian Open semifinals with a straight-sets win over Jack Draper. After trailing 2-4 in the first set, Alcaraz rallied to take control. A pivotal moment came in the eighth game of the second set, when Alcaraz saved two break points before holding. He then broke Draper at love in the next game and served out the match. Alcaraz saved six of the eight break points he faced and with the win, will move up to World No. 2 in the ATP rankings, locking in the second seed at the upcoming French Open. He is now guaranteed to be in the opposite half of the draw at the upcoming major from World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

(No. 8) Lorenzo Musetti def. (No. 2) Alexander Zverev 7-6 (1), 6-4

Lorenzo Musetti defeated second-seeded Alexander Zverev to reach the semifinals in Rome. Musetti showed resilience, saving three consecutive set points on return at 4-5, 0/40 in the first set and saving another later in the same game. He then dominated the tiebreak winning 7-1. Mixing up pace and shot selection, Musetti constantly forced Zverev out of rhythm, never letting him settle into a groove. With the win, Musetti sets up a semifinal matchup with Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of their Monte Carlo final last month.
