(No. 1) Alexander Zverev def. (No. 2) Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4
Top-seeded Alexander Zverev won his third career Munich title on Sunday, having previously winning the clay court tournament in 2017 and 2018, by defeating second-seeded Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4 in the final. The win, which came on Zverev’s 28th birthday, marked his first title of the season and the 24th of his ATP Tour career.
Zverev started the match with an early break, capitalizing on a double fault from Shelton in the opening game. From there, he dominated on serve and controlled the match from the baseline, putting consistent pressure on Shelton throughout the first set.
He opened the second set with another early break and never looked back. Although Shelton raised his level and was more competitive in the second set, he struggled to challenge Zverev’s serve and failed to generate a single break point in the match.
On championship point, Zverev went forward and sealed the win with a slice backhand volley winner at the net.
With the title, and Carlos Alcaraz’s loss to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open semifinals, Zverev is set to rise to World No. 2 in the ATP rankings, trailing only Jannik Sinner.
