(No. 2) Coco Gauff def. (No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4
Coco Gauff rallied to defeat Aryna Sabalenka in a comeback three-set match to win her first French Open title and the second Grand Slam of her career. The 20-year-old American, who also won the 2023 US Open also over Sabalenka, becomes the first American woman to win at Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015 and only the third this century.
Gauff fell behind early in the opening set, trailing 1-4 before fighting back to force a tiebreak. Sabalenka broke Gauff twice and led 4-1, 40-0, but began struggling with her serve in the windy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier, which had its roof open. Gauff capitalized, winning five consecutive points including two off Sabalenka double faults to fight her way back into the set. She broke Sabalenka in the eighth game to level the set at 4-4, and what followed was both players trading five consecutive breaks. Sabalenka, however, went on to win the tiebreak, coming back from down 0-3 to take the first set.
Despite the setback, Gauff stayed composed and elevated her level in the final two sets. She played more aggressively in the second set, stepping inside the baseline and dictating rallies. Gauff broke Sabalenka twice to take a 4-1 lead and closed out the set to force a decider. In the third set, both players exchanged early breaks before Gauff took control at 4-3 with another break of serve. She closed out the match on her second championship point, sealing her second career Grand Slam title.
The final was played with the stadium roof open, and the wind proved to be a key factor throughout. Sabalenka was visibly unsettled, often hesitating before her toss and struggling to adjust her footwork as the wind altered the ball’s trajectory. She finished the match with 70 unforced errors, accounting for 59% of Gauff’s total points, compared to Gauff’s 30. While Sabalenka hit seven more winners, Gauff’s consistency and court coverage made the difference. She remained composed throughout the chaos, using her speed and defense to wear Sabalenka down and ultimately secure the title.
