2025 French Open: Paul and Tiafoe End 22-Year Drought for American Men at Roland Garros

Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe made history at Roland Garros as the first American men to reach the French Open quarterfinals since Andre Agassi 22 years ago. Since then, several American players including Andy Roddick (2009), Taylor Fritz (2024), and Ben Shelton (2025) had advanced as far as the fourth round but failed to break through to the final eight.

That changed on Sunday, as both Paul and Tiafoe secured dominant straight set victories to become the first American men to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals since 1996 when Pete Sampras and Jim Courier met at that stage.

The 15th seeded Tiafoe earned his spot with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, while 12th seeded Paul cruised past 25th seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Tiafoe also became the first American man since Agassi in 1995 to reach the French Open quarterfinals without dropping a set. Notably, he advanced to the fourth round by defeating fellow American Sebastian Korda.

This year’s tournament marked a resurgence for American men’s tennis at Roland Garros, with five Americans reaching the third round for the first time since 1996. Paul, Tiafoe, and Shelton went on to advance to the fourth round.

Paul and Tiafoe will now look to extend their runs and pursue a first American men’s title in Paris since Agassi in 1999. Paul is set to face defending champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz who defeated 13th seeded Ben Shelton 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the previous round. Tiafoe will take on 8th seeded Lorenzo Musetti, who advanced with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 10 Holger Rune.
