2025 French Open: Semifinals Recap

The semifinals of the 2025 French Open on both the ATP WTA side has wrapped up setting up finals matchups between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, and Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff.

WTA

(No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka def. (No. 5) Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-0

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka ended Iga Swiatek’s 26-match French Open winning streak and advanced to her first ever final at Roland Garros with a three-set win. Swiatek, who had won four of the past five French Open titles, suffered her first defeat at the tournament since 2021, only the third loss of her career at Roland Garros.

Sabalenka outlasted the defending champion 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0 in Thursday’s semifinal, breaking Swiatek’s rhythm with relentless power and intensity. Sabalenka completely took over in the deciding set, winning 6-0. She played perfect tennis down the stretch, committing zero unforced errors in the third set compared to Swiatek’s 12.

Sabalenka converted eight break points in the match and used her aggressive baseline game to dominate. With the win, she not only ends Swiatek’s reign in Paris but also positions herself for a shot at her fourth Grand Slam title and her first on a surface other than hard court. She will face World No. 2 Coco Gauff in Saturday’s final.

(No. 2) Coco Gauff def. Lois Boisson 6-1, 6-2

Coco Gauff ended French wildcard Lois Boisson’s dream run at Roland Garros with a dominant straight sets win to book her spot in the French Open final. Gauff started the match racing to a 3-0 lead and broke serve four times to comfortably win the first set and never looked back.

Throughout the match, Gauff matched Boisson shot for shot, patiently waiting for errors or opportunities to strike. Boisson finished the match with just 8 winners compared to Gauff’s 12, and Gauff committed only 15 unforced errors, less than half of Boisson’s 33.

With the win, Gauff returns to the French Open final for the first time since her runner-up finish in 2022 to Iga Swiatek. She will now face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final, a rematch of the 2023 US Open final where Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at age 19.

ATP

(No. 1) Jannik Sinner def. (No. 6) Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (3)

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic to advance to his first French Open final, setting up a matchup against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner broke Djokovic early in the opening set and used his speed to dictate points. He kept the 24-time Grand Slam champion off balance with aggressive shot-making and relentless pressure to take the opening set.

Djokovic dug deep and tried to turn the match around, using his full range of skills, but Sinner had an answer for nearly everything. Throughout the match, Djokovic found himself playing behind the baseline, forced to chase balls corner to corner as Sinner controlled the pace and angles.

In the third set, Djokovic had three set points with Sinner serving at 4-5, but he failed to capitalize. Djokovic missed key opportunities, and Sinner held firm under pressure. Sinner is into his first Roland Garros final, and will aim to win a fourth Grand Slam title when he faces world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s final.

(No. 2) Carlos Alcaraz def. (No. 8) Lorenzo Musetti 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0, 2-0

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the French Open final on Friday after Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire in the fourth set due to a leg injury.

Alcaraz had a slow start, committing 16 unforced errors in the first set. Musetti managed to break serve in the second set to force a tiebreak, but Alcaraz regained control and dominated the breaker.

Trailing 0-5 in the third set, Musetti received treatment on his upper left leg and again before the fourth set started. Clearly injured in his movement, he called for the trainer again after Alcaraz broke serve to take a 2-0 lead. Musetti then approached the net and retired from the match.

Alcaraz will now aim for his second French Open crown and fifth Grand Slam title when he faces World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final.
