2025 Indian Wells: Round of 32 Recap

The round of 32 of the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells has wrapped up, and the round of 16 matchups are set.

WTA

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the round of 16 with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Lucia Bronzetti. Sabalenka looks to be in good form to start this tournament after suffering early exits in Qatar and Dubai.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek (No. 2) cruised into the round of 16 with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory over Dayana Yastremska. Swiatek will face Karolina Muchova (No. 15) next, who is coming off a 7-5, 6-1 win over Katerina Siniakova.

2023 champion Elena Rybakina (No. 7) advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Britain’s Katie Boulter (No. 25). Rybakina will face teenager Mirra Andreeva (No. 9) in a rematch of their Dubai semifinal a couple of weeks ago, where Andreeva won in three sets on her way to becoming the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 title.

American Jessica Pegula (No. 4) moved into the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over China’s Wang Xinyu. Pegula will play Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina (No. 23), who is coming off an upset 6-2, 6-4 win over American Danielle Collins (No. 14).

This year’s Australian Open champion Madison Keys (No. 5) saved 12 of the 15 break points she faced in her 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-4 win over Belgian Elise Mertens (No. 28) to extend her current match win streak to 14. Keys advances to the round of 16 and will face Donna Vekic (No. 19), who upset American Emma Navarro (No. 10) 7-6(5), 6-1.

China’s Qinwen Zheng (No. 8) secured a straight-sets win, 6-4, 7-5, over Australian Lulu Sun to reach the round of 16. Zheng will face Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (No. 18) in the next round.

Coco Gauff (No. 3) defeated Maria Sakkari (No. 29) 7-6(1), 6-2 to advance to the round of 16 at Indian Wells on Monday. Gauff was in control for most of the match but struggled to close it out, hitting six double faults before finally converting on her sixth match point. She will face Belinda Bencic (WC) next, who upset Russian Diana Shnaider (No. 13) 6-4, 6-4.

Jasmine Paolini (No. 6) battled through a tough three-set match, beating Romanian Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Paolini will face Liudmila Samsonova (No. 24), who came from behind to defeat Daria Kasatkina (No. 12) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Carlos Alcaraz (No. 2), the two-time defending champion at Indian Wells, advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Denis Shapovalov in the round of 32. Alcaraz is looking to join tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as the only players to win three consecutive titles at Indian Wells. Alcaraz will play Grigor Dimitrov (No. 14) next, who is coming off a tight three-set win, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(2), over Gael Monfils.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 8) advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Matteo Berrettini (No. 28) on Sunday. Tsitsipas will face Holger Rune (No. 12), who is coming off a competitive three-set match against France’s Ugo Humbert, winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki (Q), who entered the tournament as a qualifier, pulled off a major upset over American Frances Tiafoe (No. 16) with a 6-4, 7-6(6) win — the biggest victory of his career. He will face unranked Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16, who is coming off upset wins over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (No. 29) and top-seeded Alexander Zverev (No. 1).

France’s Arthur Fils (No. 20) survived a three-set thriller, beating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti (No. 15) 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 after saving match point in the second set. He will face American Marcos Giron, who is coming off a three-set win, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, over Alexei Popyrin (No. 26).

Daniil Medvedev (No. 5) was on court for about 10 minutes before his opponent, Alex Michelsen (No. 31), was forced to retire due to illness after two games. Medvedev will next face American Tommy Paul (No. 10), who just earned his 50th win at the Masters 1000 level with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Alex de Minaur (No. 9) secured his 50th Masters 1000 win with a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-0, over Hubert Hurkacz (No. 21) to advance to the round of 16. He will face Francisco Cerundolo (No. 25) next, who is coming off a 6-3, 6-4 win over Botic van de Zandschulp.

Taylor Fritz (No. 3), the 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion, overcame a slow start to defeat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and advance to the round of 16. He will face Britain’s Jack Draper (No. 13) next, who earned a straight-sets win, 7-5, 6-4, over American Jenson Brooksby.

Ben Shelton (No. 11) defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-5, coming back from down a break in the second set and winning the final four games of the match. Shelton advances to the round of 16, where he will face American Brandon Nakashima (No. 32).
