The finals of the 2025 Italian Open has wrapped up on the ATP and WTA sides with Jasmine Paolini and Carlos Alcaraz winning the titles.
WTA
(No. 6) Jasmine Paolini def. (No. 4) Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2
Jasmine Paolini made history in Rome by becoming the first Italian woman to win the Italian Open in 40 years. With a straight-sets win over Coco Gauff, Paolini also became the first woman since Monica Seles in 1990 to win both the singles and doubles titles at the Italian Open. She is also the first player to sweep both singles and doubles titles at a WTA 1000 event since Vera Zvonareva at Indian Wells in 2009.
The match started with three consecutive breaks of serve, but Paolini held in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and maintained control throughout the rest of the set. She continued her momentum into the second set, breaking Gauff twice for a 3-0 lead. Although Gauff managed to break back, Paolini immediately responded by reclaiming her three-game advantage and cruised through the remainder of the match to win the title.
With the win, Paolini will rise to a career-high No. 4 in the WTA rankings on Monday, boosting her seeding ahead of the French Open, which begins next weekend.
ATP
(No. 3) Carlos Alcaraz def. (No. 1) Jannik Sinner 7-6 (5), 6-1
Carlos Alcaraz defeated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner to win the Italian Open, winning his third title of 2025 and the 19th of his career.
The first set started with 11 consecutive service holds before Sinner earned double set point at 5-6, 15-40 on Alcaraz’s serve. However, Alcaraz saved both set points, held to force a tiebreak, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead before closing out the tiebreak 7-5. The Spaniard then carried that momentum into the second set, racing out to a dominant 5-0 lead and ultimately sealing the match 6-1.
Alcaraz hit 19 winners to Sinner’s 7 and kept his unforced errors nearly even with Sinner, finishing with 31 to Sinner’s 30. Notably, more than half of Sinner’s errors came off his usually reliable backhand shot.
The four-time Grand Slam champion will move up to World No. 2 in Monday’s rankings and will be placed on the opposite side of the draw from Jannik Sinner at the upcoming French Open.
