2025 Japan Open: Alcaraz Wins Eighth Title of Season with Tokyo Victory Over Fritz

(No. 1) Carlos Alcaraz def. (No. 5) Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz won his eighth singles title of the season on Tuesday with a straight-sets win over American Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final in Tokyo. The win marked Alcaraz’s ninth straight final appearance since March, when he lost in the round of 64 at the Miami Masters.

Since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final in July, the Spaniard has responded in dominant fashion, winning three consecutive titles — the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, the US Open, and now Tokyo. With his 24th career tour-level title, Alcaraz ties Alexander Zverev for the most titles among men born since 1990.

The win also gave Alcaraz some revenge after Fritz beat him for the first time at the Laver Cup in San Francisco two weeks ago. In Tuesday’s final, Alcaraz created several break chances early but finally converted in the ninth game of the first set before serving it out.

Fritz, who took two medical timeouts for treatment on his left thigh, struggled with his movement throughout the match. His thigh was strapped after three games in the second set, and he was unable to withstand Alcaraz’s relentless pace and variety.

Alcaraz immediately broke to open the second set, added another for a 4-1 lead, and despite Fritz earning his first break of the match late, the Spaniard was able to close out the championship on his next service game.

With the win, Alcaraz improved his season record to a tour-best 67-7 and solidified his position in the race for the year-end World No. 1 ranking. He now leads the ATP Tour with 67 wins and eight titles in 2025.
