The finals of the 2025 Madrid Open has wrapped up on the ATP and WTA sides with Aryna Sabalenka and Casper Ruud winning the titles.
(No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka def. (No. 4) Coco Gauff 6-3, 7-6 (3)
Aryna Sabalenka won her third Madrid Open title on Saturday with a straight-sets victory over Coco Gauff, 6-3, 7-6(3). With the win, she ties Petra Kvitova for the most women’s singles titles in tournament history, having also winning the title in 2021 and 2023.
Sabalenka started the match playing near-flawless tennis to dominate the first set. She overwhelmed Gauff with aggressive baseline play and court coverage, spreading her shots all over the court. Gauff responded well in the second set, earning an early break and even serving for the set at 5-4. However, Sabalenka saved a set point and broke back to level the score at 5-5.
In the second-set tiebreak, Sabalenka raced out to a 3-0 lead, but Gauff fought back to level at 3-3. Unfazed, Sabalenka would go on to win four straight points to seal the tiebreak and the title.
The win marks Sabalenka’s 20th career title and her fourth consecutive final appearance. She currently leads the WTA Tour in match wins this season with 31.
(No. 14) Casper Ruud def. (No. 5) Jack Draper 7-5, 3-6, 6-4
Casper Ruud made history on Sunday, becoming the first Norwegian to win a Masters 1000 title with a three-set win over Jack Draper in the Madrid Open final, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Statistically, Draper held the edge in several key categories—more winners (43 to 40), fewer unforced errors (30 to 33), a higher first-serve percentage (64% to 59%), and more points won at the net (14 to 7). However, crucial moments told a different story.
Draper served for the first set at 5-4 but made errors under pressure. He missed key first serves, double-faulted, and made uncharacteristic errors, including a shanked forehand on set point that allowed Ruud to steal the opening set. Draper regrouped in the second set, taking control to level the match.
The final set remained close until Draper’s errors once again proved costly. Ruud capitalized, showing poise and clutch shot-making to close out the match with three winners and secure the biggest title of his career.
With the victory, Ruud returns to the ATP top 10 for the first time in over a year, rising to No. 7 in the rankings.
