2025 MLB Postseason: Freddie Freeman’s 18th-Inning Walk-Off Sends Dodgers Past Blue Jays in World Series Game 3

2025 World Series Game 3: (NL No. 3) Los Angeles Dodgers def. (AL No. 1) Toronto Blue Jays 6-5

Freddie Freeman homered leading off the bottom of the 18th inning, Shohei Ohtani delivered another record-setting performance with two home runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 in a World Series classic on Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

Freeman ended the marathon by launching a 406-foot home run to straightaway center off left-hander Brendon Little, closing out a game that lasted 6 hours and 39 minutes and tied the record for the longest World Series game by innings. The only other World Series game to go 18 innings took place at Dodger Stadium in 2018, when Max Muncy hit the walk-off winner against the Boston Red Sox. It also marked Freeman’s second walk-off homer in the World Series, following his iconic game-winning grand slam in Game 1 of last year’s Series against the Yankees.

Ohtani was the other star of the night. He became the first player ever to reach base nine times in a postseason game and the second player in World Series history with four extra-base hits, joining Frank Isbell of the 1906 Chicago White Sox. He also became the first player to receive four intentional walks in a postseason game. Ohtani’s seventh-inning solo shot tied the game at 5, ultimately helping push it to extra innings.

The Dodgers’ bullpen effort proved equally remarkable. Rookie reliever Will Klein, the final pitcher available, threw four scoreless innings on 72 pitches — double his previous career high — to earn the win. Los Angeles used 10 pitchers in total, including future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw, who recorded a key out in the 12th inning. Toronto used nine pitchers of its own, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto was warming for a potential 19th inning for the Dodgers, just two days removed from his complete-game performance in Game 2.

The game saw multiple momentum swings, including Alejandro Kirk’s go-ahead three-run homer for Toronto in the fourth inning, and Ohtani’s relentless impact at the plate. Ohtani now has three multi-homer games this postseason, the most in a single postseason in MLB history.

With the win, the defending champion Dodgers move ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series and now have a chance to win the title at home for the first time since 1963. Game 4 is Tuesday night, with Ohtani scheduled to start on the mound as the Blue Jays look to avoid falling into a 3-1 series deficit.
