2025 Wimbledon: WTA Quarterfinals Recap

(No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka def. Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka had a gritty comeback win over Laura Siegemund in three sets.

After dropping the first set, Sabalenka fought back in the second, dominating with her power and precision. In the final set, she faced two separate breaks of serve and trailed 1–3, but leveled the match at 3–3. The two continued to trade games until Siegemund went up 4–3. Sabalenka then responded by winning the final three games to close out the match and punch her ticket to the semifinals.

She will now face 13th seed Amanda Anisimova in the semifinal on Thursday.

(No. 13) Amanda Anisimova def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-6 (9)

Amanda Anisimova cruised into the Wimbledon semifinals with a straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Anisimova was dominant in the first set, allowing Pavlyuchenkova just one game. However, the second set was more competitive. Despite building a lead, Anisimova struggled to close the match out, as Pavlyuchenkova mounted a late comeback to tie things at 5–5. The set eventually went to a tiebreak, where Anisimova won 11–9 in a dramatic, 20-point tiebreaker.

Behind a strong serving performance, which included 6 aces and 26 winners, Anisimova played aggressively throughout. She’ll now face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in her first Wimbledon semifinal on Thursday.

(No. 8) Iga Switek def. Liudmila Samsonova 6-2, 7-5

Eighth seed Iga Swiatek reached her first career Wimbledon semifinal with a straight sets win over Liudmila Samsonova.

Swiatek came out sharp, winning all 10 of her first-serve points in the opening set and racing to a 3–0 lead in the second. Samsonova, playing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, fought back to tie the second set at 4–4 and 5–5, but Swiatek held serve and broke to close out the match.

Samsonova’s aggressive style backfired with 38 unforced errors, while Swiatek played with more consistency and hit 20 winners. Swiatek will face Belinda Bencic in the semifinal on Thursday.

Belinda Bencic def. (No. 7) Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2)

Belinda Bencic upset seventh seed Mirra Andreeva in straight sets — both decided by tiebreaks — to advance to her second career Grand Slam semifinal and her first in six years.

In her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, Bencic had a clean and composed performance. While Andreeva posted more aces and winners, it was Bencic’s consistency and net play that made the difference. She committed just 24 unforced errors compared to Andreeva’s 37 and won 82% of her points at the net.

Bencic’s run is especially notable given that this is her comeback season after giving birth to her first child last April. Starting the season ranked 489th in the world, she’s now projected to return to the top 20 after Wimbledon.

She’ll take on five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinal on Thursday.
