2025 WTA Madrid Open Quarterfinal Recap

The quarterfinals of the 2025 Madrid Open on the WTA side has wrapped up, and the semifinal matchups are set.

(No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka def. (No. 24) Marta Kostyuk 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7)

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka needed two tiebreakers to defeat Marta Kostyuk and advance to the semifinals. Sabalenka broke Kostyuk at 5-5 in the second set. Kostyuk put the pressure on Sabalenka with her serve throughout the first set and earned a break in the ninth game, but was unable to serve out the set. Sabalenka would then win the first-set tiebreaker. In the second set, after breaking Kostyuk again at 5-5, Sabalenka earned a match point, but Kostyuk saved it and forced another tiebreak. Kostyuk had three set points in that tiebreaker, but Sabalenka saved all of them and won the match on her second match point. The two-time Madrid champion will face 17th seed Elina Svitolina for a spot in the final.

(No. 2) Iga Switek def. (No. 5) Madison Keys 0-6, 6-3, 6-2

Defending Madrid Open champion Iga Swiatek came back to win in three sets after dropping the first six games of the match. Swiatek quickly found her rhythm in the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before serving it out. In the deciding set, both players held serve through the first four games, but Swiatek broke in the fifth game and never looked back. Keys struggled to find consistency down the stretch, and Swiatek capitalized to serve out the match. Swiatek advances to the semifinals, where she will face No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.

(No. 4) Coco Gauff def. (No. 7) Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-1

Coco Gauff defeated Mirra Andreeva in a matchup between the two youngest players in the WTA Top 10. Andreeva served for the first set at 5-4 and had two set points at 40-15, but Gauff saved both and broke back to level the set. Gauff then won eight consecutive games, winning the first set 7-5 and racing to a 5-0 lead in the second. Andreeva managed to hold serve once in the second set, but Gauff closed out the match shortly after. Gauff advances to face defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.

(No. 17) Elina Svitolina def. Moyuka Uchijima 6-2, 6-1

Elina Svitolina earned a dominant straight-sets win over world No. 56 Moyuka Uchijima, extending her winning streak to 11 matches. Uchijima, who had upset No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the previous round, broke Svitolina in the opening game, but the Ukrainian remained composed and responded with three breaks of her own to take the first set. In the second set, Uchijima only managed to win one game as Svitolina won five straight to close out the match. Svitolina advances to the semifinals, where she will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
