2025 Wuhan Open: Coco Gauff Defeats Jessica Pegula to Win Wuhan Open Title

(No. 3) Coco Gauff def. (No. 6) Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5

World No. 3 Coco Gauff captured the 2025 Wuhan Open title with a straight-sets win over fellow American Jessica Pegula, marking her 11th career singles trophy and second of the season.

Gauff came out firing, breaking Pegula early to take a 3-0 lead and controlling the tempo with powerful serving and aggressive baseline play. Though Pegula managed to pull one break back to close the gap to 4-3, Gauff remained composed and capitalized on a crucial service error from Pegula late in the set to secure it 6-4. The 21-year-old tallied four aces and committed just two double faults in the opener, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

Gauff’s serve faltered in the second set as she double-faulted five times and suffered a double break, allowing Pegula to go ahead 5-3. However, Gauff’s return game proved too strong as she fought back with a double break of her own, winning the final four games to take the set 7-5 and close out the match. Statistically, Gauff’s superiority was clear — she won 74% of first-serve points compared to Pegula’s 51% and struck 24 winners to Pegula’s 13.

It was the pair’s seventh career meeting and their first in a final, with Pegula still leading their head-to-head 4-3. The win makes Gauff the first player in history to go 9-0 in hard-court finals. It also marks her first title since winning Roland-Garros in June, adding to an already stellar 2025 season that includes two titles, two Grand Slam victories overall, and three WTA 1000 crowns. Gauff now heads into the WTA Finals as the top-ranked American and one of the most in-form players on tour.
