Patek Philippe Aquanaut (Ref. 5060A)

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5060A is the original Aquanaut, introduced in 1997. In the late ’90s, younger watch buyers were gravitating toward more casual and sporty watches. At the time, Patek Philippe’s Nautilus was nearly 20 years old, and there was growing demand for a more casual and sporty alternative. The Aquanaut was created as Patek Philippe’s answer—a versatile sports watch with a rubber strap, offering a slightly smaller and more accessible option while still maintaining the signature aesthetic of the Nautilus.

The 5060A features a stainless steel case measuring 35.6mm in diameter and 8.5mm thick, with 19mm lugs. It comes equipped with a sapphire crystal, a solid steel case back, and a screw-down crown, ensuring water resistance up to 120 meters (394 feet). The watch was only available with a black “grenade” dial, featuring Arabic numerals and luminous markers that reinforced its sporty appeal.

Notably, the Aquanaut was Patek Philippe’s first watch to feature a rubber strap, a bold and unconventional move for the brand at the time. The strap was engineered to be highly resistant to saltwater and UV rays, making it exceptionally durable for an active lifestyle.

With its limited production run, the 5060A has become highly collectible. Prices on the secondary market typically range between $30,000 and $40,000, reflecting its rarity and historical significance within Patek Philippe’s lineup.
