2025 Stuttgart Open: Women’s Final Recap

Jelena Ostapenko def. (No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-1

Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko pulled off a major upset on Monday, defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in dominant straight sets to win the indoor clay court Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The win marks Ostapenko’s ninth career WTA title and her first of the season.

On her way to the title, Ostapenko defeated both of the top two players in the world, No. 2 Iga Swiatek in a three set quarterfinal and No. 1 Sabalenka in the final, in one of the most impressive runs of her career.

Ostapenko was dominant behind her first serve, winning 81% of those points compared to just 53% for Sabalenka. She also consistently pressured Sabalenka’s serve, generating 11 break points and converting six of them. In contrast, Sabalenka had only three break opportunities, converting two.

Ostapenko secured an early break for a 2-0 lead in the first set, but Sabalenka fought back to level the set at 4-4. Ostapenko then broke again for 5-4 and served out the set.

In the second set, Ostapenko completely took over. Sabalenka managed to win just 10 points, four of which came in a single break to love, and only five points on her own serve. By the end of the match, Ostapenko was in full control, clinching the title with back to back return winners.

Playing at a quick pace and hitting winners from all corners of the court, off the return, at the net, and even from defensive positions, Ostapenko had one of her most complete performances to date.
