Aaron Rodgers has officially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year, $13.6 million deal that includes $10 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $19.5 million with incentives. The 41-year-old quarterback had been linked to the Steelers throughout the offseason, and the deal was finalized just ahead of the team’s minicamp.
Rodgers was released by the New York Jets in March and took time to consider his options before choosing Pittsburgh. Entering his 21st NFL season, Rodgers joins his third team with a resume that includes 62,952 career passing yards, 503 touchdown passes, 4 league MVPs, 10 Pro Bowl selections, a Super Bowl title, and Super Bowl MVP. As a future first-ballot Hall of Famer, Rodgers brings championship pedigree and elite experience to a Steelers franchise seeking stability under center.
Since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2022, Pittsburgh has had Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Justin Fields as Week 1 starters. The team hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season, largely due to inconsistency at the quarterback position.
Rodgers is expected to start for the Steelers and will be their fourth different Week 1 starter since Roethlisberger’s retirement. While he’s no longer in his athletic prime, he remains one of the most accurate and intelligent quarterbacks in the league. His quick release and elite ball placement make him a natural fit for a timing-based offense, and he’s still capable of making tight-window throws when protected.
After tearing his Achilles in week 1 of the 2023 season, Rodgers returned to the field last year and showed flashes of his old form late in the season. He finished with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Although the Jets struggled to a 5–12 record, Rodgers looked more mobile and confident as the year progressed, showing improved rhythm and comfort in the pocket coming off an Achilles tear.
The Steelers are optimistic that Rodgers, paired with their superior offensive line and coaching staff, will find better success in Pittsburgh than he did in New York. The organization is counting on the future Hall of Famer to bring leadership, consistency, and playoff-caliber play back to an offense that has had zero playoff success in recent years. With Rodgers at the helm, the Steelers hope to end their playoff drought and contend in a competitive AFC North.
