2025 US Open: Women’s Semifinals Recap

(No. 1) Aryna Sabalenka def. (No. 4) Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka rallied past Jessica Pegula in three sets on Thursday to return to the US Open final, keeping her title defense alive at Flushing Meadows. It was a rematch of the 2024 final, also won by Sabalenka.

Pegula hit 21 winners against just 15 unforced errors and dominated on serve in the decider, where she lost only four points, but Sabalenka’s firepower proved decisive. She hit 43 winners, including 8 aces, accounting for nearly half of her total points won. Despite 27 unforced errors, Sabalenka’s aggression tilted the match in her favor as she won 75% of her service points.

Sabalenka is into her third straight US Open final, where she will attempt to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012 through 2014 to win consecutive titles in New York. She will face No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova on Saturday.

(No. 8) Amanda Anisimova def. (No. 23) Naomi Osaka 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3

Amanda Anisimova staged a comeback on Thursday night, defeating Naomi Osaka in three sets to advance to her second straight Grand Slam final. Just two months removed from her first major final at Wimbledon, the 24-year-old American delivered another statement performance.

Osaka appeared in control when serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set, but Anisimova broke back and dominated the ensuing tiebreak, racing out to a 4-0 lead and forcing a decider. With momentum on her side, Anisimova dictated play in the third set, closing out the match in just over two and a half hours.

The win sets up a final against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, a rematch of their Wimbledon semifinal earlier this summer where Anisimova stunned the top seed. She now has another chance to win her first Grand Slam title on Saturday.
