Mariners’ Cal Raleigh Breaks Switch-Hitter HR Record, Ties Franchise Record

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is rewriting the baseball record books. On Tuesday night in Kansas City, Raleigh homered twice in Seattle’s 12-5 win over the Royals, cementing his place in history.

Just two days after tying Mickey Mantle for the most home runs in a single season by a switch-hitter (54), Raleigh launched his 55th of the season — a 419-foot blast to right field off starter Michael Wacha in the third inning — to break a record that had stood since 1961. One inning later, he added No. 56, a two-run shot from the right side of the plate, tying Ken Griffey Jr. for the Mariners’ single-season franchise record. Raleigh now leads all of MLB with 56 home runs this season, matching Griffey’s totals from 1997 and 1998.

So far this season, Raleigh has hit 35 homers as a left-handed batter and 21 as a right-handed batter.

Seattle’s win marked their 10th straight win, their longest streak since winning 14 in a row during the 2022 season. The Mariners remain one game ahead in the AL West as they chase their first division title since 2001. With 11 games left, Raleigh has the chance to climb even higher on baseball’s single-season home run list while his team pushes for a deep playoff run in October.
