2025 Vienna Open: Sinner Overcomes Adversity to Beat Zverev for Vienna Open Title

(No. 1) Jannik Sinner def. (No. 2) Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5

Jannik Sinner battled back from a set down to win his fourth title of the season, defeating Alexander Zverev 3–6, 6–3, 7–5 in the Vienna Open final on Sunday. The win marked Sinner’s second title in Vienna and his 21st career tour-level crown.

The top-seeded Italian, who extended his indoor hard-court winning streak to 21 matches, overcame physical struggles and a slow start to outlast Zverev in a tense, two-hour and 29-minute match. Despite dealing with hamstring cramps in both the first and third sets, Sinner’s composure and resilience carried him through a dramatic decider.

Zverev, the 2021 Vienna Open champion, started strong, breaking Sinner twice to build a 4–1 lead in the opening set. The German closed it out 6–3 in 46 minutes, punishing Sinner’s movement as the Italian appeared to limp between points. However, Sinner found his rhythm in the second set, raising his level with precise serving and aggressive baseline play to secure an early break and claim the set 6–3.

In the final set, both players held serve tightly until Sinner began to struggle again with cramps midway through. Refusing to give up, the World No. 2 adapted his game plan, shortening rallies and increasing his aggression to keep Zverev under pressure. The adjustment paid off when Sinner broke serve for 6–5 on his way to earning three championship points before sealing the win as Zverev netted a backhand.

The Vienna title adds to an already stellar 2025 season for Sinner, who also won titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the China Open earlier this year. His win over Zverev was the pair’s first meeting since Sinner’s straight-sets win in the Australian Open final back in January.
