2025 Swiss Indoors Basel: Joao Fonseca, 19, wins biggest career title in Basel over Davidovich Fokina

Joao Fonseca def. (No. 8) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4

Joao Fonseca continued his breakout season on Sunday at the Swiss Indoors Basel, capturing his second tour-level title and first at the ATP 500 level with a straight sets win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 19-year-old Brazilian became the third youngest ATP 500 champion since the series began in 2009 and the first Brazilian to win a title above the ATP 250 level since Gustavo Kuerten won in Cincinnati in 2001.

Fonseca displayed poise beyond his years, the teenager dictated play from the baseline, hitting 29 winners, 20 of them off his forehand, while committing just 19 unforced errors. His relentless pace and precision left Davidovich Fokina struggling to find rhythm, extending the Spaniard’s record to 0–5 in tour level finals.

The Brazilian had a quick start, breaking twice to race ahead 3–0 in the first set. Though Davidovich Fokina broke back to close the gap, Fonseca quickly regained control, securing another break and serving out the opening set in 40 minutes. In the second set, Fonseca broke in the opening game and maintained his composure through the finish line, sealing the win on his second championship point after just under 90 minutes of play.

With the Basel title, Fonseca will rise to a career high No. 28 in the ATP Rankings, moving up from No. 145 at the start of the year. His triumph adds to an impressive list of 2025 achievements: his maiden title in Buenos Aires, where he became the youngest South American champion in ATP Tour history, and a standout run at the Australian Open that included his first Top 10 win over Andrey Rublev.
