2025 MLB Postseason: Yesavage’s Record 12 Strikeouts Lead Blue Jays Past Dodgers in Game 5

2025 World Series Game 5: (AL No. 1) Toronto Blue Jays def. (NL No. 3) Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1

In just his eighth major league start, Trey Yesavage pushed the Toronto Blue Jays one win away from a World Series title. After Toronto opened Game 5 with back-to-back home runs, Yesavage delivered a dominant, record-setting performance in a 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Yesavage struck out 12 batters over seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits without issuing a walk. The 22-year-old set a World Series rookie record for strikeouts in a single game, surpassing Don Newcombe’s mark of 11 in 1949. He also became the first rookie in MLB history to record multiple postseason starts with at least 11 strikeouts, having previously fanned 11 in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Yankees. Additionally, Yesavage became the first pitcher in World Series history to record at least 12 strikeouts with zero walks in a game.

Toronto set the tone immediately. Davis Schneider launched Blake Snell’s first pitch of the night into the left-field seats, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed two pitches later with a no-doubt homer of his own. It was the first time in World Series history that a team opened a game with consecutive home runs.

The Dodgers briefly cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning on a solo homer by Kiké Hernández, but Toronto rebuilt its lead. The Blue Jays added a run in the fourth, two more in the seventh, and another in the eighth as Snell struggled for the second straight outing. The left-hander allowed five earned runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts across 6⅔ innings.

The defending champions have scored just four runs across their last 29 innings, and outside of Freddie Freeman’s walk-off in the 18th inning of Game 3, the Dodgers’ offense has been quiet.

With the win, the Blue Jays now hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and will return home to Toronto with a chance to clinch their first World Series championship since 1993. Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Rogers Centre, where Toronto will have two opportunities to secure the title in front of its home crowd.
