2026 Acapulco Open: Flavio Cobolli defeats Frances Tiafoe to win Acapulco title

(No. 5) Flavio Cobolli def. (No. 8) Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (4), 6-4

Flavio Cobolli captured his first hard-court ATP Tour title and third career title on Saturday with a championship win at the Mexican Open. Seeded fifth in Acapulco, the Italian delivered a high-level performance to defeat Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 6-4 in the championship match.

Cobolli controlled most of the final with pinpoint forehand accuracy and confident shotmaking, dictating play from the baseline and remaining steady in the biggest moments. His title run will propel him to a career-high No. 15 in the ATP Rankings on Monday, marking another significant milestone in his rapid rise.

At 23, Cobolli became the fourth man born in the 2000s to win ATP 500 titles on multiple surfaces, joining an elite group that includes Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Arthur Fils. Despite entering the final having lost his previous two meetings with Tiafoe, Cobolli showed no hesitation. After missing a set point on return at 5-4 in the opening set, he fell behind 1-3 in the tiebreak before winning six of the final seven points to take control of the match.

Tiafoe did not generate a break opportunity until the eighth game of the second set, where he converted his third chance to level the score at 4-4. Any momentum was short-lived, however, as Cobolli responded immediately, breaking back and then calmly serving out for the win after two hours and nine minutes.

The Acapulco title builds on a breakthrough 2025 season for Cobolli, who won the ATP 250 event in Bucharest and the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg last year. He is also the youngest Mexican Open champion since Dominic Thiem lifted the trophy at age 22 in 2016.
