Kevin Durant passes Michael Jordan for fifth on the NBA all-time scoring list

With a three-pointer against the Miami Heat on Saturday night, Kevin Durant moved into the top five on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, passing Michael Jordan with career point No. 32,393. Durant finished with 27 points in the Houston Rockets’ 123-122 win, surpassing Jordan and continuing his steady climb up the points scored leaderboard.

Durant entered the fourth quarter with 21 points and pulled within striking distance after knocking down a three-pointer with less than five minutes remaining. Moments later, he sealed the milestone by drilling another three from nearly the same right-corner spot, pushing his total to 32,294 points and moving two clear of Jordan. Earlier this season, Durant also passed Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki, leaving only Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and LeBron James ahead of him.

Consistency and efficiency have defined Durant’s scoring career. He has averaged at least 25 points per game in 17 of his 18 NBA seasons and has shot 50% or better from the field in each of the past 13 years. Selected No. 2 overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA Draft, Durant revolutionized scoring for players his size, using his 6-foot-11 frame, elite shot-making, and perimeter skill to dominate at all three levels. He won four scoring titles in his first seven seasons and captured the league’s MVP award in 2014.

Now in his 19th NBA season, with one year missed due to injury in 2019–20, Durant is in his first season with Houston following a blockbuster trade from Phoenix last summer. A 16-time All-Star, two-time NBA champion, two-time Finals MVP, and four-time Olympic gold medalist, he remains one of the league’s premier talents. Entering Saturday, Durant was averaging 25.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists while shooting 52% from the field, 40% from three, and 89% from the free-throw line, helping lead the Rockets to a 42-27 record and a strong push toward the playoffs.
