(No. 4) Tommy Paul def. Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-1, 3-6, 7-5
Tommy Paul staged a dramatic comeback to capture the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship title in Houston, saving three championship points to defeat Román Andrés Burruchaga 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in a gripping final. The victory marked Paul’s fifth ATP Tour title and his first on clay.
After cruising through the opening set, Paul lost momentum in the second as Burruchaga raised his level to force a decider. The Argentine seized an early break in the third set and appeared on the brink of victory when he held three championship points on Paul’s serve at 5-3. Paul, however, showed remarkable composure, escaping trouble with the help of two Burruchaga errors before closing the game with a sharp volley winner.
That escape proved decisive. Paul broke serve in the following game and went on to win three straight games to seal the match, all while serving at 3-5 in the final set. Burruchaga, playing in his first ATP Tour final, was unable to convert his chances, while Paul finished the match having saved nine of the 12 break points he faced.
The two-hour, 40-minute battle ensured a fifth consecutive American champion in Houston and added Paul’s name to a recent run that includes Reilly Opelka, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, and Jenson Brooksby. At 28 years old, Paul also became the oldest champion at the event since Juan Mónaco won the title at age 32 in 2016.
