Rolex Explorer Reference 1016 (Lifestyle)
September 20, 2024
The Rolex Explorer is one of Rolex’s most iconic models, and the reference 1016 is the most iconic version of the Explorer line. The 1016 was produced from 1960 to 1989, and the watch is loved because of its simplicity, durability, and timeless design.
The dial of the watch has a classic matte dial with the signature 3/6/9 numerals that are the main feature of the Explorer line. Early versions of the 1016 had a gilt dial (gold-one text) and later versions of the 1016 had the same matte dials, but with white text.
The case is 36mm and is made of a durable stainless steel with a smooth bezel. The crystal is made of plexiglass and is more prone to scratches compared to modern sapphire crystals. The bracelt that the watch originally came on was Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, but collectors do replace the bracelet with various straps from leather to NATO.
Vintage Rolex has been extremely hyped up in recent years, and it is tough to find 1016s in good condition, and those examples will always fetch a premium for collectors. Prices in recent years for 1016s have been anywhere between $10,000 to $45,000.
