Angels Complete Sweep, Knock Dodgers from Top Spot in NL West

The Los Angeles Angels completed a season sweep of the Freeway Series with a 6–5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night at Angel Stadium, marking their seventh straight win over their crosstown rivals dating back to last season.

Logan O’Hoppe delivered the go-ahead two run single with two outs in the eighth inning off a 103.2 mph fastball from reliever Edgardo Henriquez. The clutch hit capped the Angels’ comeback from a 5–2 deficit and secured their first ever six game sweep of the Dodgers in a single season. It was also just their second Freeway Series sweep overall, the first since going 4–0 in 2019, and their first three game home sweep of the Dodgers since May 2007.

The Dodgers appeared in control early behind Shohei Ohtani, who was making his ninth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani allowed just two runs through four innings and entered the fifth at 62 pitches, his highest total of the year. But after recording one out, he gave up consecutive singles to O’Hoppe and Bryce Teodosio before Zach Neto doubled in two runs. Ohtani was pulled after 4 1/3 innings, having allowed a season high four runs on five hits, more than he had surrendered in his previous eight starts combined.

The loss extended a losing skid for the defending World Series champions, who have now dropped four straight and slipped into second place in the NL West behind the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers will look to regroup when the division leaders arrive at Dodger Stadium for a weekend series starting Friday.

For the Angels, the sweep was another improbable milestone in a season that began with modest expectations following a 99 loss season. At sub .500, they swept both three game sets against the defending World Series champs and set a franchise record with seven consecutive wins over the Dodgers.
