Canelo Alvarez reclaimed his status as the undisputed super middleweight world champion with a unanimous decision win over William Scull on Saturday night at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Alvarez previously unified all four major titles at 168 lbs with a TKO win over Caleb Plant in November 2021 and successfully defended the belts four times. However, he was stripped of the IBF title in 2024 after opting to face Edgar Berlanga instead of a mandatory defense against Scull. Scull would go on to win the vacant IBF title with a controversial decision over Vladimir Shishkin this past October, setting up Saturday’s fight against Alvaraz as his first title defense.
Alvarez entered the ring holding the WBA, WBC, and WBO titles, with the goal of regaining the IBF belt to become undisputed for the second time. The opening rounds were slow, with both fighters cautiously feeling out the range. Alvarez consistently walked Scull down but struggled to land clean, effective shots. Scull found some rhythm in the sixth round, throwing more punches and using his lateral movement to frustrate Alvarez, though he failed to find any consistent offense.
Despite Scull’s evasiveness and defensive movement, Alvarez gradually picked off rounds with his body work and pressure. The fight lacked dominant moments from either fighter, but Alvarez’s control and consistent pressure made him the clear winner on the scorecards.
With the win, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) improves to 11-0 at super middleweight and becomes a two-time undisputed champion in the division.
Up next, Alvarez is set for a blockbuster fight against former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford on September 12 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), who has claimed titles in four weight classes—including undisputed runs at 140 and 147 lbs—will be moving up to 168 lbs in pursuit of boxing history against a man who’s never lost at that weight.
