Isolation: Basketball Concepts (Sports)

August 18, 2024

An isolation in basketball (aka “iso”) refers to a type of offensive play where a player is set up to be able to play one on one against a defender, with minimal support from their teammates. The best scenario for an isolation would be to have the the team’s best offensive player in a position where they can create a mismatch with a defender to create better scoring opportunities.

Essentially an isolation involves giving one player (usually the team’s best one on one scorer) the basketball, and having their teammates clear out to give the ball handler a chance to score one on one.
