Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg Becomes Youngest Player in NBA History to Drop 40

Cooper Flagg delivered a historic performance Monday night, breaking a record set by LeBron James more than two decades ago, despite the Dallas Mavericks falling 140–133 in overtime to the Utah Jazz.

The 2025 No. 1 overall pick scored 42 points, the most ever by an 18-year-old in NBA history, surpassing the previous record of 37 points set by James on Dec. 13, 2003, during his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Flagg, who turns 19 on Sunday, became the first 18-year-old to eclipse the 40-point mark and just the third teenager to record at least 40 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in a game, joining James and Kevin Durant.

Flagg also added 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal, showcasing his all-around impact in one of the most impressive performances of his young career.

With Dallas trailing by three in the final 15 seconds of regulation, Flagg nearly carried the Mavericks to a win. He drew a foul and knocked down his first free throw before intentionally missing the second. Guard Max Christie secured the rebound, was fouled, and made his free throws to force overtime.

Flagg scored 40 of his 42 points in regulation and added two more in overtime, accounting for half of Dallas’ four overtime points. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the absence of Anthony Davis, who did not play due to a left calf contusion.

Flagg did most of his damage attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line. He shot 9-of-17 in the paint and went 15-of-20 from the stripe, tallying 24 points in the first half alone.

Flagg’s previous career high was 35 points, set in a Nov. 29 win over the LA Clippers. He has been on a tear in recent weeks, averaging 25.7 points over his last seven games, with his aggressive style consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses.

Although the Mavericks came up short, Flagg’s performance in Utah marked a clear milestone. In just his first season, the 18-year-old etched his name into the NBA record books with the best performance of his young career.
