The New York Yankees opened the 2026 MLB season with a shutout 7–0 win over the San Francisco Giants on Opening Day. New York jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, riding 6⅓ shutout innings from left-hander Max Fried to secure its fifth consecutive Opening Day win.
Facing Giants ace Logan Webb, the Yankees broke the game open in the second inning with six straight hits, scoring five runs. Trent Grisham, playing his first game since returning to the team on a qualifying offer last winter, punctuated the outburst with a run-scoring triple. The lopsided start spoiled the managerial debut of Tony Vitello, who took over the Giants this season.
New York added two more runs in the fifth inning, pushing Webb’s ERA to 10.80 after six earned runs, the most he allowed in any start during the 2025 season. The Yankees’ offense was productive across the board, as every hitter recorded a hit except one. Notably, reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, marking the first time since 2024 that he struck out four times in a game.
Fried was dominant after a brief wobble in the first inning. He issued a four-pitch leadoff walk to Luis Arraez and allowed a bloop single, but recovered by striking out Willy Adames and inducing a groundout from Jung Hoo Lee to escape the threat. Overall, Fried allowed just two hits, struck out four, walked one, and threw 56 of his 83 pitches for strikes in a strong Opening Day performance.
