Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship: Sweet 16 Recap

The Sweet 16 round of the 2025 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship has wrapped up, and the Elite 8 matchups are set to take place this weekend on the 29th and 30th.

(No. 1) Auburn def. (No. 5) Michigan 78-65

Auburn had a dominant second-half performance to defeat No. 5 Michigan 78-65, securing a spot in the Elite Eight. The Tigers overcame a nine-point deficit and outscored Michigan 39-17 over the final 12.5 minutes to take control of the game. Auburn advances to face No. 2 Michigan State in the Elite Eight.

(No. 2) Michigan State def. (No. 6) Ole Miss 73-70

Michigan State forced a comeback to defeat No. 6 Ole Miss 73-70. Down by 10 points earlier in the game, the Spartans rallied behind a clutch layup from Carson Cooper with 40 seconds remaining. Ole Miss missed two opportunities to tie the game late and was forced to foul to extend the game, but Michigan State converted key free throws to secure the win. The Spartans move on to face No. 1 Auburn in the Elite Eight.

(No. 1) Florida def. (No. 4) Maryland 87-71

Florida advances to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2017 with an 87-71 victory over Maryland. Despite committing 13 of their 17 turnovers in an ugly first half, the Gators cleaned up their play in the second half. Six Florida players scored in double figures, and the team’s depth off the bench was key with a 29-3 advantage in points off the bench. Florida advances to face No. 3 Texas Tech.

(No. 3) Texas Tech def. (No. 10) Arkansas 85-83

Texas Tech comes back from down 16-points in the second-half to beat Arkansas 85-83 in an overtime thriller. The Red Raiders outscored Arkansas 27-11 down the stretch, tying the game at 72 to force overtime. Three Texas Tech players scored at least 20 points, and Darrion Williams delivered the game-winning basket with seven seconds remaining. Texas Tech will face No. 1 Florida in the Elite Eight.

(No. 1) Duke def. (No. 4) Arizona 100-93

Duke withstood a late rally from No. 4 Arizona to win 100-93 and clinch a spot in the Elite Eight. The Blue Devils maintained a double-digit lead for most of the game, led by freshman and top NBA prospect Cooper Flagg, who posted an impressive 30 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks. Duke advances to face No. 2 Alabama.

(No. 2) Alabama def. (No. 6) BYU 113-88

Alabama delivered a record-breaking performance in their 113-88 blowout win over BYU. The Crimson Tide set NCAA Tournament records for points in a game (113), three-pointers made (25), and three-point attempts (51). Mark Sears led Alabama with 34 points, shooting 10-for-16 from beyond the arc. Alabama moves on to face No. 1 Duke in the Elite Eight.

(No. 1) Houston def. (No. 4) Purdue 62-60

No. 1 Houston secured a dramatic 62-60 victory over No. 4 Purdue, thanks to a perfectly executed inbounds play that resulted in Milos Uzan’s game-winning layup with 0.9 seconds left. The Cougars led 56-46 with less than eight minutes to play but struggled offensively, making only one field goal in that stretch until Uzan’s game-winning basket. Houston will take on No. 2 Tennessee in the Elite Eight.

(No. 2) Tennessee def. (No. 3) Kentucky 78-65

Tennessee advanced to the Elite Eight with a 78-65 win over No. 3 Kentucky. The Volunteers jumped out to a 19-9 lead early and maintained control throughout the game. Tennessee dominated the boards with a 34-24 rebounding advantage, including a 14-7 edge on offensive rebounds, leading to numerous second-chance points. The Volunteers will face No. 1 Houston in the Elite Eight.
