Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka made her return to the US Open earlier today and earned her first top-10 win in four years, defeating Jeļena Ostapenko in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Osaka played a near perfect game only having 5 unforced errors compared to Ostapenko’s 21. Her outfit choice was just as good as her win, and one of her best match outfits.
In recent years, Nike tennis athletes have typically worn bright neon outfits with very unusual and abstract designs. The only “iconic” Nike Tennis outfits that come to mind are Andre Agassi’s jean shorts in the 90s, Roger Federer’s Wimbledon cardigan and suit warmup in the 2000s, and Serena Willam’s jean skirt in 2004 and Virgil Abloh/Off-White designed tutu in 2018.
Osaka’s outfit choice was a green dress with bows and ruffles all over from her top all the way down to her shoes. The dress was part of her Ambush collection designed by Yoon Ahn (co-founder of the Tokyo label Ambush in 2008). Ambush and Nike have had frequent collaborations since 2018, and with Osaka being a Nike athlete known for her fashion off the court, this was the perfect collaboration. This green dress is Osaka’s “day” outfit, and she also has a “night” version of this dress in black that she will wear during night matches.
