Nissan unveiled an all-electric version of their iconic R32 Skyline GT-R earlier this week at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. The project has been in development for nearly two years, transforming the legendary JDM car, nicknamed ‘Godzilla,’ into a modern electric vehicle.
This R32 EV is a one-off project aimed at preserving the classic design of the R32 GT-R while future-proofing its performance. Nissan sought to replicate the driving dynamics of the original gas-powered R32 GT-R by using electric motors and batteries from their Leaf Nismo RC02 (Nissan’s all-electric concept race car). The addition of the EV components increased the original donor car’s weight by about 816 pounds (370 kg), but the car’s torque and performance were fine-tuned to match the specifications of the original R32 GT-R.
The R32 EV features one electric motor at the front and another at the rear, maintaining an all-wheel-drive layout similar to the original. The wheel setup was designed to resemble the original stock wheels, but Nissan’s engineers opted for larger 18-inch wheels instead of the original 16-inch ones, and they used bigger brakes from the current generation GT-R.
Many purists may not appreciate the project’s removal of the five-speed manual transmission in favor of electric paddle shifters and the addition of fake engine noise pumped through the speakers. However, this electric R32 GT-R is currently a one-off project, with no production version or conversion kit planned.
