Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch (Lifestyle)
September 13, 2024
The MoonSwatch collaboration between Omega and Swatch has been one of the most popular and talked about watches in recent years with the collaboration first launching during spring 2022. The collaboration was made up of 11 reinterpreted versions of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch that were more affordable and unique. Each of the watches were inspired by different bodies in our solar system like the Moon and various planets.
The MoonSwatch retailed for $270 which is significantly cheaper compared to the classic Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch retailing for $7,000. The MoonSwatch is powered by a quartz movement (battery) and features a case that is made from Swatch’s “bioceramic” material (nice quality plastic), and came in a wide range of vibrant colors. The Moonwatch is powered by Omega’s 3861 manual-winding movement, and is made of a steel case.
The MoonSwatch was extremely hyped up for collectors, and the watches were only exclusive to in-store releases up until recently. Despite retail prices being at $270, prices on the secondary market had peak sales in the $800 to $1,500 range. Hype has started to slow down for the MoonSwatch, and Swatch recently made their “The Classic Four”: Mission on Earth, Mission to the Moon, Mission to the Sun, and Mission to Mars versions of the watch available to purchase on their website for the first time since the original launch.
Personally I really do like the MoonSwatch. I don’t think it will scratch the itch for someone who wants the original Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, but I don’t think that was the original intention for the MoonSwatch collection. I see it as a fun collectible item.
