In 2023, Rolex introduced one of its most unexpected and creative interpretations of the Day-Date, a model that displays neither a traditional day nor date. Instead, the watch replaces the classic complications with “emotion-driven” expressions, adding playfulness to everyday timekeeping. By presenting a new emoji each day, the watch has the wearers to associate the time with their changing moods and outlooks.
Crafted exclusively in 18 ct yellow gold, white gold, or Everose gold, the watch features a completely reimagined dial. The signature arc-shaped aperture at 12 o’clock no longer shows the day of the week, but instead reveals one of seven inspirational keywords in English: Happy, Eternity, Gratitude, Peace, Faith, Love, and Hope. At 3 o’clock, the traditional date window now displays one of 31 unique emojis, including playful motifs such as a kissy face, four-leaf clover, eight ball, heart, peace sign, and the Rolex coronet.
The dial is entirely created using a vibrant champlevé enamelling. Its design is inspired by a jigsaw puzzle, with turquoise blue, red, fuchsia, orange, green, and yellow pieces interlocking across a single-color background. Each fragment symbolizes a key moment in life, reinforcing the watch’s emotional theme. Hour markers are set with 10 baguette-cut sapphires in six different hues, carefully matched to the dominant dial color.
Two dial configurations are offered. The yellow gold and white gold models feature a turquoise base, while the Everose gold version is paired with an orange base. Both designs incorporate the multicolor jigsaw motif and rainbow sapphire hour markers, creating a visual rhythm that mirrors the unpredictability of the emoji display. Each watch is completed with Rolex’s iconic President bracelet, reinforcing its Day-Date lineage despite the unconventional presentation.
Powering these Day-Date 36 models is Rolex’s calibre 3255, a movement at the forefront of modern watchmaking. Alongside hours, minutes, and seconds, it drives the daily rotation of inspirational keywords and monthly cycle of emojis, delivering a technical foundation worthy of one of Rolex’s most unique watches.
