Rolex Explorer Ref. 14270 vs. Ref. 114270 (Lifestyle)

August 20, 2024

When I was deciding to buy a watch, my Rolex options were between a Datejust and an Explorer. I ended up with the Datejust as I wanted something a little more dressy. I also did see myself getting a Submariner or GMT Master in the future too, and the Explorer being a sport watch makes it more similar to those watches compared to the Datejust. You can check out my Datejust buying guide here!

With the Explorer I was between reference 14270 and reference 114270. Both references are pretty similar, but there are a few minimal differences that I will explain.

Rolex Explorer 14270 (Ranges between 1989-2001)

  • Movement: Caliber 3000
  • Case Size: 36mm
  • Lume: Tritium lume used on the hour markers and hands. Tritium lume is known to develop a patina over time
  • Crystal: Sapphire Crystal
  • Bracelet: Oyster bracelet with hollow end links and a stamped clasp

Rolex Explorer 114270 (Ranges between 2001-2010)

  • Movement: Caliber 3130 (upgraded with better shock resistance)
  • Case Size: 36mm
  • Lume: Super-Luminova is used instead of tritium, which provides a more consistent glow that doesn’t patina
  • Crystal: Sapphire Crystal
  • Bracelet: Updated Oyster bracelet with solid end links and a more secure clasp.

Both of these Rolex Explorer references are nearly identical, and the 114270 reference is considered to be a refinement of the 14270 reference. Price is also pretty similar, with the 114270 reference being a few hundred dollars more expensive for most listings.

My personal pick would be the 14270 reference because I prefer the aged patina look of the tritium lume on the hour markers! However, both look identical to the eye, and you really have to be looking for specific minimal details to be able to tell the difference.
