The New York Giants announced Tuesday that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will replace veteran Russell Wilson as the team’s starter, beginning with Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium against the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers (3–0).
The move comes after New York’s 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, their second game this season with fewer than 10 points scored. At 0-3, the Giants have one of the league’s worst offenses, producing fewer than 300 yards in two of three games and averaging just 17.3 offensive points per game, 26th in the NFL.
Wilson, who signed a one year, 10.5 million dollar contract in the offseason, was intended to serve as a bridge quarterback while Dart learned behind the 36 year old Super Bowl winner and fellow backup Jameis Winston. Though he threw for 450 yards in Week 2 against Dallas, Wilson’s stint as the starter lasted just three games, all losses.
Dart, selected 25th overall in this year’s draft out of Ole Miss, impressed during the preseason, completing 32 of 47 passes (68%) for 372 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no interceptions, while adding 52 rushing yards and a score. He has seen limited action so far in the regular season, but Sunday will mark his first career start against a Chargers defense allowing fewer than 300 yards per game.
With the Giants’ front office under increasing pressure, New York is just 9-28 since the start of 2023, Dart will be asked to provide a spark for an offense that has yet to find its rhythm.
