Sex and the City 1 and 2 (2008/2010)

Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010) are the film adaptations of the hit TV series (1998–2004) and book (1996), following the lives, personal relationships, and friendships of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon).

The first movie is set four years after the series finale and follows each of the characters as they navigate different personal challenges. Carrie plans her wedding with Mr. Big, but their relationship faces many ups and downs throughout the process. Charlotte becomes a mother through adoption and, after struggling with infertility, unexpectedly gets pregnant naturally. Miranda’s marriage is strained due to her demanding career as a lawyer and lack of intimacy, and things worsen when her husband Steve confesses to cheating on her. Samantha, now in Los Angeles with her younger actor boyfriend, ultimately breaks up with him because she struggles with monogamy and wants to move back to New York.

The second movie takes place two years later, with the four friends dealing with new stresses in their lives and deciding to take a vacation to Abu Dhabi. Carrie and Mr. Big are now married, but Carrie worries that their relationship lacks excitement. While in Abu Dhabi, she unexpectedly runs into her ex-boyfriend Aidan, which complicates things. Charlotte feels overwhelmed by motherhood and fears that her husband might be attracted to their younger attractive nanny. Miranda, overwhelmed with her job as a lawyer, decides to quit and take time off to find a more fulfilling career. Samantha struggles with menopause and takes hormone supplements to maintain her youthful sex appeal and faces cultural issues while in Abu Dhabi.

The first movie feels more structured, with the central storyline revolving around Carrie’s wedding and marriage to Mr. Big. In contrast, the second movie lacks a strong narrative, instead focusing on random moments during their trip to Abu Dhabi as they try to escape their personal stresses.
