Tom Sachs and Nike’s NikeCraft program have officially returned with the third generation of the Mars Yard sneaker. First teased in February with a breakdown of its new technical upgrades, and later showcased in May, the Mars Yard 3.0 is now set for release through a unique program that allows sneaker enthusiasts to earn access to purchase the sneakers ahead of its September launch.
The Mars Yard originally released in 2012, followed by the improved Mars Yard 2.0 in 2017. A Mars Yard 2.5 surfaced in 2020 but was limited to participants in a wear-test program, requiring pairs to be returned after use. Over time, the early Mars Yard models have become highly sought-after collectibles, selling on resale platforms for as much as $13,000 for the 1.0 and $7,000 for the 2.0.
The Mars Yard 3.0 represents the latest evolution of Sachs’ aerospace-inspired design philosophy, reimagined for both creative work and daily life. This new iteration incorporates Nike React foam for cushioning, a carbon fiber shank for stability, and a natural rubber outsole for improved durability. A redesigned lacing system ensures a more inclusive fit, supported by 4-millimeter ribbed polyester laces with Nike Running technology, a blucher-style eye stay, staggered eyelets, and a nylon lace keeper that mirrors the heel strap. Additional enhancements include a TPU toe cap for protection, a TPU heel clip for stability, and a silkscreen-printed red Swoosh that maintains the Mars Yard’s signature aesthetic.
To acquire the Mars Yard 3.0, NikeCraft has introduced the I.S.R.U. (In-Situ Resource Utilization) app, which challenges participants to complete weekly tasks and climb a points-based leaderboard. Those who finish in a high enough position will earn the opportunity to purchase the sneaker through Tom Sachs’ webstore on September 5, priced at $275. The process reinforces Sachs’ ongoing focus on consumer participation, making the Mars Yard 3.0 an interactive sneaker release.
