Two Time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray Joins Vikings on One Year Contract

Quarterback Kyler Murray is no longer a member of the Arizona Cardinals and has signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings after being released. The move comes just one day after Arizona cut ties with its former No. 1 overall pick.

The contract is for the league minimum, with Minnesota paying $1.3 million of Murray’s $36.8 million fully guaranteed salary for the 2026 season. The Cardinals will cover the remaining $35.5 million as part of his release. The deal also prevents the Vikings from using the franchise or transition tag next offseason, giving Murray a clear path to free agency.

For Murray, the opportunity represents a chance to reset his career. In Minnesota, he joins a strong supporting cast that includes head coach Kevin O’Connell, tight end T. J. Hockenson, and star receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. The Vikings are also seeking competition for former first-round pick J. J. McCarthy, meaning Murray will have to earn the starting job rather than be handed the role.

Selected first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray made an immediate impact by winning Rookie of the Year honors. He later earned Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021, but his tenure in Arizona was marked by inconsistency and injuries. Over seven seasons, he posted a 38-48-1 record as a starter and led the team to just one playoff appearance, a wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

Injuries played a major role in his decline, including a torn ACL in 2022 and a foot injury that limited him to just five games in 2025. In those appearances, Murray went 2-3 while throwing for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Across his career, he has totaled 121 passing touchdowns, 60 interceptions, and 32 rushing scores.

Now 28 years old, Murray gets a fresh start in Minnesota, where both he and the Vikings will look to turn potential into production heading into the 2026 season.
