UFC 311: Makhachev vs Moicano Recap

UFC 311 took place earlier tonight at the new Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, headlined by lightweight champion Islam Makhachev making his fourth title defense against 10th-ranked Renato Moicano. Makhachev was originally scheduled to fight No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan, but Tsarukyan withdrew from the fight on Friday morning due to a back injury sustained during his weight cut. Moicano, who was initially set to face the 9th-ranked Beneil Dariush earlier on the UFC 311 card, stepped up as the replacement for the lightweight title fight.

Makhachev secured the win, making quick work of Moicano with a first-round submission via D’Arce choke. Makhachev becomes the first UFC lightweight to defend his title four consecutive times, breaking a four-way tie with BJ Penn, Benson Henderson, Frankie Edgar, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The co-main event saw reigning bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili earn his first title defense with a unanimous decision win over undefeated 2nd-ranked Umar Nurmagomedov. Dvalishvili outpaced Nurmagomedov for most of the fight and was able to increase his momentum in the final two championship rounds. The champion attempted 21 takedowns and successfully converted six of them, while also outstriking Nurmagomedov 69-44—all in the final 10 minutes of the fight, all while showboating to the crowd.

The third fight on the main card was a light heavyweight bout between two former world champions, Jiri Prochazka and Jamahal Hill. Prochazka scored a knockdown in the first round and won the round, but Hill was able to recover and work his way back into the fight, taking the second round by mixing up his offense. Prochazka secured a TKO victory with ground and pound after knocking down Hill with a left-right combination in the third round, making his return to the win column after back-to-back losses to the current champion, Alex Pereira.

The second fight on the main card was a bout between two top 10 ranked heavyweights, Jailton Almeida and Serghei Spivac. Spivac scored an early takedown, but Almeida managed to get back on his feet and land a barrage of heavy punches, finishing the fight by TKO on the ground in the first round.
