The UFC is back in Canada at the Bell Centre in Montreal for UFC 315, featuring two title fights: a welterweight title fight between reigning champion Belal Muhammad and fifth-ranked contender Jack Della Maddalena in the main event, and a women’s flyweight title fight between champion Valentina Shevchenko and second-ranked contender Manon Fiorot in the co-main event.
Jack Della Maddalena def. Belal Muhammad (c) via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46)
Jack Della Maddalena is the new UFC welterweight champion, becoming the third Australian to win UFC gold with a unanimous decision victory over Belal Muhammad.
Della Maddalena found early success by standing and trading strikes with Muhammad, consistently getting the better of the exchanges and building a lead on the scorecards. Muhammad began to close the gap in rounds three and four, applying pressure and backing Della Maddalena up, but he continued to struggle with takedown attempts and failed to deliver significant damage.
In the fifth round, Della Maddalena reasserted himself in the striking exchanges, landing a sharp knee that busted Muhammad open. Although the champion managed to drag him to the mat and land a heavy elbow, Della Maddalena rallied late, hurting Muhammad and finishing strong with heavy strikes until the end of the fight.
With the win, Della Maddalena extends his UFC win streak to eight and his overall winning streak to 18, winning the welterweight title and joining Robert Whittaker and Alexander Volkanovski as Australian UFC champions.
Valentina Shevchenko (c) def. Manon Fiorot via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
Valentina Shevchenko successfully defended her women’s flyweight title with an unanimous decision win over Manon Fiorot.
The champion started strong, using sharp counters to hurt Fiorot in the opening round. Fiorot responded well in the second, settling into the fight and finding some rhythm. The third round was closely contested, with neither fighter establishing clear dominance.
In the fourth, Shevchenko had her most decisive moment, dropping Fiorot with a right hook late in the round. The fifth round played out mostly in the clinch, with Fiorot controlling the position but unable to land anything of significance.
With the win, Shevchenko continues her dominant reign and further solidifies her legacy as one of the greatest fighters of her generation.
Aiemann Zahabi def. José Aldo via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Aiemann Zahabi earned the biggest win of his career, defeating Brazilian legend José Aldo via unanimous decision and prompting Aldo to once again announce his retirement from MMA.
Aldo started the fight strong, showcasing his boxing, while Zahabi took time to make reads and adjust. Toward the end of the first round, Zahabi began to apply more pressure, setting the stage for a competitive second round where both fighters traded heavy shots.
Early in the third, Aldo hurt Zahabi badly and poured on the offense, but he emptied his gas tank. Zahabi capitalized, dominating the closing minutes of the fight with pressure and volume.
With the win, Zahabi extends his winning streak to six. After the fight, Aldo left his gloves in the center of the Octagon, signaling his retirement. The former featherweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer exits the sport as an icon and pioneer in MMA.
