UFC 323: Dvalishvili vs. Yan 2 Recap

The UFC closed out its 2025 pay-per-view calendar on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, headlining the event with title fights in the bantamweight and flyweight divisions.

Petr Yan def. Merab Dvalishvili (c) via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47)

Petr Yan is once again the UFC bantamweight champion, delivering a disciplined performance to defeat Merab Dvalishvili in the main event of UFC 323.

This rematch played out completely differently from their first meeting in 2023. In that fight—held after Yan’s first title reign had ended and before Dvalishvili’s title run—Dvalishvili dominated with relentless pressure. He attempted 49 takedowns, and although Yan defended 38 of them, the nonstop pace wore him down and kept him on the defensive, never allowing him to find any meaningful offense.

This time, the roles reversed. Dvalishvili (21-5), who entered UFC 323 with a UFC-record 117 career takedowns, opened the fight by emphasizing his striking—an interesting decision against one of the division’s best boxers. His trademark wrestling was largely neutralized; he went just 2-for-29 on takedown attempts, failing to secure a single one through the first two rounds. Yan, meanwhile, scored the first takedown of the fight midway through Round 2 and finished 5-for-9 overall.

Yan’s striking was the real difference-maker. He landed 60% of his significant strikes, repeatedly snapping Dvalishvili’s head back with clean jabs and damaging him with powerful kicks to the body. By the championship rounds, Dvalishvili’s face was bloodied and his pace had slowed.

Unlike their first fight, Yan took command from the opening seconds. He pressed forward, applied constant pressure, and made clear strategic adjustments—attacking the body, maintaining distance discipline, and punishing failed takedown entries. His best work came late, as he hurt Dvalishvili multiple times in the fifth round to punctuate a masterful performance.

All three judges scored the bout for Yan, who now joins Dominick Cruz and TJ Dillashaw as the only fighters to win the UFC bantamweight title twice. With the rivalry now tied at one win apiece, a trilogy fight feels inevitable.

Joshua Van def. Alexandre Pantoja (c) via first-round TKO (injury)

Joshua Van (16-2) became the second-youngest champion in UFC history on Saturday night, capturing the 125-pound title with a TKO win over Alexandre Pantoja (30-6) in the co-main event of UFC 323 at T-Mobile Arena.

The finish came just 26 seconds into the fight after Pantoja suffered a severe left-arm injury while attempting a head kick. Van partially caught the kick, causing Pantoja to lose his balance. As he twisted midair and tried to brace his fall, his arm bent gruesomely beneath him. He immediately signaled for the fight to be stopped, bringing the bout to an abrupt end.

Pantoja, who had successfully defended the flyweight belt three times before Saturday, left the Octagon right away to seek medical attention. The injury ended one of the greatest runs in flyweight history. Since winning the title in June 2023 by split decision over Brandon Moreno and defending it four times, Pantoja had entered conversations about being one of the best flyweight of all time, alongside names like Demetrious Johnson.

This was not the way Van envisioned becoming champion, but the result still marks a career-defining achievement for the 24-year-old. He becomes the first Asian-born male to win a UFC title and closes out 2025 with a perfect 4-0 record, extending his winning streak to six.
