UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs Brady Recap

The UFC returned to the O2 Arena in London with a card headlined by a welterweight fight between former champion Leon Edwards and No. 5-ranked Sean Brady. The co-main event featured former light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz taking on No. 6-ranked Carlos Ulberg. Edwards entered the main event looking to rebound after losing his title to Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 in July, while Brady was aiming to cement his status as a rising contender, with his only career loss coming against the current champion, Muhammad.

In the main event, Sean Brady delivered a dominant performance against Leon Edwards, earning the biggest win of his career and solidifying his place as a top contender in the welterweight division.

The fight opened with both fighters exchanging strikes in the first round. Brady outstruck Edwards in the exchanges and capped off the round with a late takedown. In the second round, Brady secured an early takedown, took Edwards’ back, and controlled the action while landing heavy ground-and-pound strikes for the remainder of the round. He maintained his dominance in the third and fourth rounds, repeatedly taking Edwards down and eventually advancing to full mount. From there, Brady locked in a one-armed mounted guillotine, forcing Edwards to submit and sealing the win early in the fourth round.

Brady’s dominance was reflected in the fight stats, successfully completing 5 of 7 takedown attempts, with 11:10 of control time, and outlanding Edwards by a one-sided margin of 221 to 23 in total strikes.

With this win, Brady is expected to rise to the top of the welterweight rankings when they are updated on Monday. However, his path to a title shot remains uncertain. Belal Muhammad, who defeated Brady by TKO in 2022, is scheduled to defend his title against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 on May 10. Additionally, with Shavkat Rakhmonov also in line for a title shot, the UFC may opt to delay a potential rematch between Brady and Muhammad.

The co-main event featured a light-heavyweight fight between No. 6-ranked Carlos Ulberg and No. 3-ranked former champion Jan Blachowicz. The fighters entered the fight on different trajectories: Ulberg was riding a seven-fight winning streak, while Blachowicz, returning from injury, had not competed since July 2023 and was coming off a loss and a draw in his last two fights.

The fight was a competitive three-round striking battle, with neither fighter establishing clear dominance. Ulberg held a slight advantage in total strikes, landing 75 compared to Blachowicz’s 59. While Blachowicz showed moments of success, Ulberg’s advantage with volume and accuracy ultimately swayed the judges, and earned him a unanimous decision win.

Ulberg’s win extends his winning streak to eight and places him in the light-heavyweight title conversation, while Blachowicz faces questions about his future in the division after another setback.
