The UFC returned to Atlanta, Georgia, for the first time since 2019, delivering a stacked Fight Night card headlined by a five-round welterweight fight between former champion Kamaru Usman and rising contender Joaquin Buckley. In the co-main event, two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas faced off against No. 11-ranked Miranda Maverick in a flyweight fight.
In the main event, former UFC welterweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman stepped back into the Octagon to take on rising No. 7-ranked contender Joaquin Buckley. The fight marked Usman’s return to the 170-pound division for the first time since his trilogy loss to Leon Edwards in March 2023. Meanwhile, Buckley came into the fight riding a six-fight win streak with momentum.
The co-main event featured Rose Namajunas in her pursuit of flyweight gold. The two-time strawweight champion entered the fight in need of a win after dropping a decision in her most recent outing, while Miranda Maverick came in riding a four-fight win streak and aiming to earn the biggest victory of her career.
Kamaru Usman def. Joaquin Buckley via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47)
Kamaru Usman secured his first victory in over three years with a dominant unanimous decision win over rising contender Joaquin Buckley, snapping a three-fight losing streak and earning his first win since November 2021.
In a vintage performance, Usman leaned heavily on his wrestling to overwhelm Buckley. He secured takedowns in each of the first four rounds and suffocated Buckley with top control and relentless ground-and-pound. Usman racked up 12:57 minutes of control time and outlanded Buckley 137-51 in total strikes. He opened a small cut near Buckley’s right eye with elbows in Round 1 and continued a similar blueprint through the next three rounds.
Buckley mounted a late rally in the fifth round as Usman began to fade. He stuffed all six of Usman’s takedown attempts in the final frame and found success on the feet, landing powerful hooks and uppercuts that appeared to hurt the former champion. However, Usman’s experience and composure allowed him to weather the storm and close out the fight, ultimately snapping Buckley’s six-fight winning streak.
With the victory, Usman re-enters the welterweight title picture and could be in line to face the winner of the upcoming title fight between reigning champion Jack Della Maddalena and Islam Makhachev, expected later this year.
Rose Namajunas def. Miranda Maverick via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Former two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas improved to 3-2 at flyweight with a unanimous decision win over Miranda Maverick. Her only losses in the division have come against top contenders Manon Fiorot (No. 2) and Erin Blanchfield (No. 4).
Namajunas controlled much of the fight by winning the striking exchanges and mixing in timely takedowns. She used her footwork and sharp counters to keep Maverick at bay while dominating the ground game with 6:33 minutes of control time, compared to Maverick’s 1:48.
Maverick had her best moment late in Round 2 with a near-submission attempt, but Namajunas responded in the third round by dropping Maverick with a clean left hook. She then kept the fight on the group to close out the fight convincingly.
Still one of the biggest names in the 125-pound division, Namajunas continues to position herself for big fights and could be a contender again soon with another win in 2025.
