The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on their longest losing streak of the season, four games, due largely to a depleted pitching staff. Three key starters — Roki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow, and Blake Snell — are currently sidelined with shoulder injuries.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto stepped up delivering a dominant ace-level performance. The right-hander threw seven shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing just three baserunners. He did not surrender a hit through the first six innings and tossed a Major League career high 110 pitches to help keep the Dodgers in control.
However, his effort nearly went to waste when closer Tanner Scott gave up a one run lead in the top of the ninth, then surrendered a two run homer in the 10th to put the Dodgers in a 1-3 deficit.
Los Angeles quickly responded in the bottom of the 10th. Tommy Edman led off with an RBI double to cut the deficit in half. Shohei Ohtani was intentionally walked, and Mookie Betts moved Edman to third with a flyout. Ohtani then stole second, and with first base open, Freddie Freeman was also intentionally walked. With the bases loaded, Will Smith was hit by a pitch from former Dodger Shelby Miller, forcing in the tying run. Max Muncy then capped off the comeback with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Ohtani from third for a dramatic 4-3 walk off win and snapping the Dodgers’ losing streak.
