Yamamoto Tosses Complete Game as Dodgers Defeat Brewers in NLCS Game 2

Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered a masterful performance on Tuesday night, pitching a three-hitter in the first postseason complete game in eight years as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series.

A night after Blake Snell dominated Milwaukee for eight innings in Game 1, Yamamoto followed with an even more impressive outing, giving the Dodgers’ bullpen another night off. Yamamoto allowed just one run on three hits — the only run being a solo home run to Jackson Chourio on his first of 111 pitches. From there, Yamamoto was untouchable, striking out seven and walking one in his first complete game in two major league seasons.

The performance marked the Dodgers’ first complete game since Gavin Stone accomplished the feat on June 26 of last year, and their first in the postseason since Jose Lima’s shutout against the Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2004 NLDS. The last postseason pitcher to go the distance before Yamamoto was Justin Verlander, who threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Houston Astros against the New York Yankees in the 2017 ALCS.

Yamamoto’s gem continued a remarkable postseason for the Dodgers’ rotation, which has posted seven quality starts in eight games this October. Snell has allowed just two earned runs with 28 strikeouts over 21 innings, Tyler Glasnow threw six scoreless frames to eliminate the Phillies in the NLDS, and Shohei Ohtani delivered a quality start in his playoff debut. With Yamamoto’s latest performance lowering his postseason ERA to 1.83, Los Angeles starters now own a collective 1.54 ERA in eight playoff games, accounting for six of the team’s seven postseason wins so far.
